Good morning. Thought I'd pass along some info on a little research I've done and ask you to verify. The 1870 Census on Pinkney B. Riley in Washington Co. Florida shows his 1st wife Martha , their children, and a Dicy Hicks and her son Dallas (Dwelling # 195). Adjacent to Pinkney & family is an Armistead Hicks & family (Dwelling #194). Then I located in the 1850 Washington County Census a Mason Hix (Hicks) b- 1799, S.C., wife Vasti (Vashtie) b- 1799 S.C. and several children, three of whom are Armistead, Dicy, and Martha. One might assume from this that Pinkney's 1st wife was a Hicks. Further research revealed that Martha's brother Armistead served with Pinkney in the Florida 6th Regiment Company K. Also, Mason and Vashtie (Renfroe) Hicks were married in Henry County in 1825, and the 1830 and 1840 Henry County Census records show the Hicks residing there. If and when you have time, please let me know what you think. Hope this note finds you well.

Erv. Your rationale sounds good and may be correct. There was also a Martha Huckaby living next door to Pinckney in HH 181 on the 1860 Census. I selected Martha Huckaby as Pinckney's first wife based on speculation of them being next door neighbors and the same speculation could apply to Martha Hicks. Without some further evidence we cannot know which one is correct. Dale County had a lot of Hicks associated with the Riley's. On the 1920 Census of Russell County Alabama there was a Hicks living as a boarder in my fathers house. A Martha E. Hicks married Andrew Barker and was the grand mother of my fathers first wife Lenora Barker. I will do some more digging.

Erv. The 1870 Census that lists the sister and her daughter as part of the household of Pinkney and Martha makes a strong case for Martha's maiden name to be Hicks and not Martha Huckaby. We can't be 100% sure as Martha Huckaby was the next door neighbor to Pinckney on the 1860 Census. I am changing my records to reflect Martha Hicks as Pinkney's wife. Thank you for your diligent research.
Pete; You can post this and ask for corrections or comments. Thanks. Jim
